What are the first steps?
Your first step is to book a free Get Started call to connect with me and for us to understand your needs.  Calls are conducted via Zoom but can be over the telephone if you prefer.  You can book via contact page or simply by calling or emailing me using the links below.
What's going to be in our first call?

I offer a free Get Started call to give us the opportunity to connect before you commit to any sessions.  During the call I will ask about your sport and what you would like my input on.  From there we can discuss the options that will best meet your needs and agree how to take this forward.

An important aspect of this call is for you to get to know me and ensure I am the right coach for you.  You are under no obligation to commit to any sessions following the call.

I'm not a runner, can you still help?

Yes!  Whatever your sport, I have it covered.  My personal sport of choice is running but the mindset coaching and therapy tools I offer are suitable for all sports.  I will always endeavour to understand the unique needs of your chosen sport to ensure that everything I deliver can be applied to your field.

If you are a sports person but there is something outside of sport that is impacting on you, please do not worry.  I will be happy to discuss this with you during our initial call as sports mindset coaching and therapy can be farther reaching than your sport alone.  If we both agree that Psychology to Succeed can meet your specific needs then we’ll go for it.  If we both agree that there is another organisation that will be better able to help, I will provide their contact details for you.

What is a mindset coaching?

Mindset coaching combines NLP (neuro linguistic programming), hypnosis and time-line therapy into a targeted system for training how you think, see yourself, and what you do, so that you can get the very best from yourself both in your running life and your wider life. 

My coaching style incorporates therapy and consultation so that I fully understand where you are now and can therefore unlock your performance potential.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitising and Reprocessing) is a NICE recommended treatment for people experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but is increasingly used in the treatment of a vast range of difficulties which are underpinned by a difficult experiences and anxieties.  In the world of running, this may be injury, a DNF, a performance that did not go well, or even a feared catastrophe during an upcoming event. 

EMDR targets both mine and body so is well placed to target repetitive performance problems and difficulties with injuries that linger despite the body being healed.

EMDR can also be used to develop places of safety, resources and positive projections of yourself which can help get you in the correct mindset for optimum performance.

I am an accredited EMDR therapist with EMDR UK and Ireland.

What is CBT?

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based and NICE recommended treatment for depression and a range of anxiety disorders.  In addition, sports psychology draws heavily on the tools CBT has to offer.  

CBT aims to help you gain perspective about whatever is troubling you.  Together we identify what might be stopping you from reaching your full potential and what we can work on to help to get you there.  CBT is a short-term, collaborative therapy which aims enable you to use CBT techniques in a range of situations both during and after treatment.

My approach utilises ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), which is increasingly being used in sport psychology.  ACT is a form of CBT which uses mindfulness to work on the relationship you have with your thoughts and emotions so they no longer get in the way of you doing what matters.

I am an accredited CBT therapist with the BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies).

How do you conduct online sessions?

Online sessions are conducted using Zoom.  You do not need a Zoom account to attend the sessions.  Zoom enables us to connect via video conferencing so is comparable to a face to face session.  You will be sent a Zoom link for the session which you simple click on when you’re ready to join the meeting.  Some devices will ask you to download the free Zoom App in order to connect which you can do in advance of the session.

For the session, make sure you’re in a quite, private space, sit comfortably, feel free to make a cuppa and we’ll connect via our webcams as if we’re talking face to face.

For your security Zoom is encrypted and I use the password and waiting room features.

Do you offer face to face sessions?

Due to COVID-19 I am not currently offering face to face sessions.  

What are your session options?

During the Get Started call, we’ll agree what is going to be most helpful for you.

I offer three running mindset coaching packages designed for specific needs: The Happy Runner, The Confident Runner, and The Well Runner.

In addition I offer bespoke sports mindset coaching as well as EMDR and CBT for a range of difficulties and mental health issues.

What are your standards of practice?

The organisations listed below have devised codes of ethics and best practice guidelines which, as an accredited member, I adhere to fully:

The trust between client and coach/therapist is crucial to the success of the process and I treat all information disclosed as confidential.  Your notes and personal information will be kept securely.

Regular clinical supervision is a requirement of my accrediting bodies and essential for ensuring continued best practice.  As such, relevant information, without names or identifiable personal details, will be discussed with my clinical supervisor, who is also BABCP and EMDR UK and Ireland accredited and subject to the same confidentiality requirements as I am.

Should you wish for me to liaise with or share any information with a third party, such as a sports coach, we will agree the exact content of the disclosure and sign an agreement to allow me to share the information you wish.

Confidentiality will only be broken if I have significant concerns that you or anyone else is at risk.  If this occurs it will be discussed with you in the session and recommendations will be discussed, agreed and documented.  Wherever possible a signed agreement to disclose information will be completed.

Are you GDPR compliant?

 I am registered with the ICO as part of GDPR.  Full details are detailed below and contained in my client information sheet which you will receive prior to our first appointment.  All information is treated with the upmost confidentiality

Your information and how it will be used
Upon starting therapy, basic personal information will be collected for contact and identification reasons.  During our sessions notes will be taken.  These will include personal and sensitive details about your life.  This information is solely used for the delivery of a therapy service for you.

Your rights
You have rights relating to the information I hold about you and you have the right to verify the accuracy or ask for them to be supplemented, deleted, updated or corrected.  I want to make sure your information is up to date and accurate.  You may ask me to correct or remove information you think is inaccurate, and you have the right to request the transfer of your data to another individual or company.

You have the right to request a copy of the information that I hold about you.  If you would like a copy of some or all of your personal information, please email me.  Information will be provided to you within 30 days of your request.

How long your information is kept for
Your information is kept for the time necessary to provide the coaching/therapy service requested, however, outside of this I will hold your details and session notes for a period of 7 years following the end of treatment to comply with the legal obligations that are placed upon me by my insurers.  After this date, all data will be securely deleted and destroyed.

Sharing of data
There may be time when your information needs to be shared with 3rd parties.  If this arises I will explicitly ask for your written consent before doing so, and the data will be sent to the 3rd party securely.

Security of your data
Information will be kept securely and confidentially in line with the data retention policy as stated above.  All written notes are kept in a locked cabinet which only I have access to.  Electronic records are securely held in a business Google Drive account. 

Lawful basis for processing your information
The lawful basis for my holding and using your information is in relation to the delivery of a contract to you as a health care professional.  As an accredited member of BABCP and EMDR UK and Ireland I operate under a strict code of confidentiality.
